IS YOUR CULTURE HELPING OR HINDERING PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT?
New research reflects how much organisations continue to struggle to define and land effective approaches to performance management. While employers continue to invest in new tools and frameworks, anticipated impact on performance fails to deliver. And, in the worst cases, negatively impacts the employee experience.
So the question for all of us in HR and OD is:
Are we aligning how we manage performance with our desired culture?
What levers do we have that can bring culture and performance into alignment? How do we bring our leaders into the conversation? Managers don’t just need basic ‘have a performance conversation’ skills, they need to have the conversations that will embed a culture aligned with performance.
It all sounds obvious, doesn’t it? Don’t ask for collaboration, and then implement individual bonus structures. Don’t try to embed values in a world where leaders are indifferent to them.
And yet I see many excellent intentions and investments in performance management fail to deliver impact because the culture isn’t aligned, as well as places with good working cultures that are undermined by out-of-kilter approaches to managing performance.
I’ve invited a good friend and colleague – Belinda Gannaway from Fathom XP, a brilliant designer of employee experience and all round culture guru – to explore these issues with me in our next webinar:

Meanwhile – developing a feedback culture is a current objective for many OD teams. Did you know that 3C has a fabulous software tool that supports exactly that culture?
It’s called (surprise!) Frequent Feedback.
For users it looks and feels like an app. Actually, it’s a clever software tool that supports a feedback driven approach to managing performance. It’s ideal for organisations with 50 – 500 employees and some of our clients have been using it for years. You can find out more here.
