How can self-directed learning empower managers to manage?
We’ve all been there.
We’ve set up excellent classroom workshops, touted great feedback from previous sessions and aligned all the content with current needs – and then hardly anyone turns up. Then the criticism comes through that managers lack key skills!
What is an L&D professional to do?
Many of you have turned to self-directed learning – but this isn’t always the silver bullet you hoped for. A lot of self-directed learning is quite theory heavy, as that is the easiest material to deliver.
Encouraging managers to develop new skills and empowering them to apply them in practice is a much taller order. Too many managers either fail to complete or get the certificate but nothing changes.
Here’s what we have learned: STORY – STORY – STORY
When we care about characters – when we want to know what happens next – we will keep following the programme, learning as we go.
Keep the theory short and simple – just enough to give the learner what they need to progress. You can always provide references to more in-depth learning at the end. Then focus on engaging learners to empower them with the reality of applying ideas in practice. These stories can be written or told visually through animation or video depending on your budget.
I‘ve been honing my story-telling skills recently while completing a Masters in Writing for Performance at the University of Cambridge. I believe our 3C stories are better than ever at engaging and empowering managers.
We will soon be launching a powerful new solution to help your organisation strengthen its performance management culture with story-telling at its core.
We’ve developed a suite of six self-directed learning modules covering the full spectrum of performance management:

✅ Managing Change
Hosted on your intranet | Self-paced | Practical | Scalable | Option to Tailor to Your Organisation

And if you are developing your own content – give me a ring on the number below if you’d like a story to start with!
