You can’t just tinker with bits of performance management if you need real change

‘You can’t just tinker with bits of performance management if you need real change’

I recently had the pleasure of welcoming the Chief People Officer of Ofcom, Kerri-Ann O’Neill to our Talking Performance webinar.  She shared her experience of re-thinking performance management in the context of a wider cultural change across Ofcom.

One of the topics that most resonated with me was her discussion about the scale of change – how she had thought at the beginning that a little bit of simplification and clarification would make a process that no-one loved into a value-adding activity.

She shared a thought perhaps many of us have had – that some processes have been around for so long that you begin to think there are no alternatives.    And it was challenging herself and her team to move beyond that and to look afresh at everything the HR team was providing to the business, that helped to see where value was being added, and where change was needed.

This was brave and powerful thinking, but the results speak for themselves.  One of Kerri-Ann’s truly positive outcomes was the rise in engagement among all colleagues for those embracing the new approach to managing performance.
